1999 Bentley Azure Mulliner

Despite a flurry of activity in the late 1990s, including new model launches and a major ownership shift to BMW and Volkswagen, Bentley didn’t neglect the Azure. 1999 saw the introduction of the Bentley Azure Mulliner, a limited edition bespoke variant tailored to buyers’ desires. Mulliner, Bentley’s commissioning division, has catered to client needs for the longest time, showcasing a tradition for bespoke craftsmanship. All cars that receive the Mulliner treatment represent the ultimate in Bentley Luxury, and the Bentley Azure Mulliner is no exception. Four of the 155 Azure Mulliner examples were built in 1999 at Bentley’s plant in Crewe, England, making the 1999 Bentley Azure extremely rare in the Azure lineup. So, which special treatment did the Azure Mulliner receive?

Like regular Azure models, the 1999 Bentley Azure Mulliner was produced with Bentley’s turbocharged 6.75 liter engine. However, this one in particular was lifted from the Bentley Continental T with 420 horsepower and 645 lb.ft at the rear wheels, which was enough to send it to 60 mph from a dig in around 6.0 seconds. Despite some body modifications, weight remained similar to other models at 5,754 pounds, which seems way less, especially when under throttle. GM’s four-speed automatic transmission was still in play, and Bentley showed no plans to change it anyway since the first-gen Azure was near the end of production. But despite its old age, it was enough for the 1999 Bentley Azure Mulliner to reach a 155-mpg top speed, which Bentley had to electronically govern probably for safety reasons and aerodynamic instability considering the Azure’s weight and near brick-like shape.

Mulliner might not have done as much work on the 1999 Bentley Azure Mulliner’s interior as they did on the exterior, but it wasn’t left lacking. Still beautifully appointed, it featured diamond quilted leather seats and rich wood veneer, customizable in different accents to buyers’ desires. The front seats received electric adjustability and heating like in other variants, and the driver’s seat retained a memory function aimed at making the driving experience bespoke for every driver. On the other hand, the rear seats remained as comfortable and spacious as they had always been since the Bentley Azure’s inception, making it one of the best two-door luxury convertibles.
